Project Name: Atlas Women’s Centre
Executive Summary
Lisburn Women’s Centre was founded in 1994. In 2002 due to community response the name changed to Atlas Women’s Centre. Atlas stands for Adult Training Learning And Support and continues to deliver training, learning, support, childcare, advice and guidance to the most vulnerable, disadvantaged and isolated individuals and families.
Our aims and objectives are designed to address the needs of the community:
improving physical, mental & emotional wellbeing
increasing confidence and self- esteem
facilitating self-help and self-development
reducing isolation and loneliness
reducing poverty by enhancing skills and education
We help address these needs by providing a range of services, including courses, workshops, counselling, support groups, support services and sessional childcare. There is an average of 30 activities/courses/programmes running weekly. Training & Education can be accredited and nonaccredited as follows:
Accredited – Maths, English, ICT, Parenting, Employability, Community development, Unblocking Potential, Good Relations, First Aid, Safeguarding Children
Non-Accredited – Confidence Building, Empowerment, Coping with Stress, Promoting Women’s Mental Health, Promoting Men’s Mental Health, Art Therapy for young people, Personal Development, Parenting, Arts & Crafts, ICT, Domestic Abuse Awareness, Women’s Self Defence, History and Culture, Mindfulness, Relaxation Practises, Healthy Eating & Cooking, Gardening.
We have six counsellors in training and three qualified counsellors who volunteer their services free to help service users and non-service users’ work through difficult issues. We also have a team of 44 volunteers who help in all departments including the café, the creche, front of house, the garden, fundraising and raising awareness at promotional events.
Activities are mainly delivered from The Atlas Centre as it is accessible, integrated and non-judgemental. You can attend Atlas for a cuppa in the café, learn a new skill, see a counsellor or have an opportunity to chat with others. Additionally, Atlas runs activities and provides outreach creche in venues within disadvantaged and rural communities, however this has been on hold since Covid-19
We are located opposite Lisburn train station in a really handy place at the top of Bachelors walk.
